Target taps Brightstar and MarketSource for mobile

BY Staff Writer

New York — Target is relying on two new services providers to operate its mobile business following an end to its short-lived relationship with RadioShack.

Target said it plans to rely on Brightstar, the world’s largest specialized wireless distributor and leading provider of diversified services to the wireless industry and MarketSource, a leading provider of integrated sales and marketing services company to support its mobile business beginning in April 2013. Target Mobile is the name of the retailer’s in-store wireless shopping stations that are available in 1,500 of its stores. Plans call for Brightstar to serve as Target’s mobile’s new supply chain and point-of-activation technology provider, while MarketSource will be the in-store sales services partner.

"Collaborating with Brightstar and MarketSource will further enhance Target’s position in the wireless retail marketplace," said John Butcher, VP of electronics at Target. "These partnerships move the business forward and ensure our guests will receive the latest products and services coupled with Target’s exceptional value and best-in-class shopping experience."

The two companies assume responsibilities previously managed by RadioShack following Target and RadioShack’s inability to successfully renegotiate a contract. Since October 2012, RadioShack had been renegotiating the terms of the relationship with Target to establish an agreement that would be profitable to both companies, according to a RadioShack statement. At that time, RadioShack executed a termination notice that would allow the company to exit the Target business if an agreement could not be reached.

"In order for RadioShack to have continued this relationship, we needed to establish a new agreement that would be financially appealing to both companies," said Telvin Jeffries, RadioShack’s EVP, chief human resources officer and general manager of retail services. "Ultimately, we amicably agreed to dissolve the relationship."

NRF warns retailers of possible trouble ahead

BY CSA STAFF

NEW YORK — Despite caution among consumers, retailers wrapped up 2012 with a healthy holiday shopping season, according to a new report by a retailing trade group.

The National Retail Federation said that holiday retail sales increased 3% over the year before, to $579.8 billion. December retail sales increased 0.8% seasonally adjusted from November and 2.1% unadjusted year over year. Nevertheless, the 3% increase was still below the NRF’s projected 4.1% growth. Meanwhile, nonstore holiday sales grew 11.1%.

"For over six months, we’ve been saying that the fiscal cliff and economic uncertainty could impact holiday sales," NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay said. "As the number shows, these issues had a visible impact on consumer spending this holiday season. We can’t expect consumers to continue to carry the burden of growing our economy — Washington must put political differences aside and do what it takes to get our country growing again and Americans back to work."

But retail sales growth is "highly unsustainable" due to tax-related pressure on income, spending and weather-related issues in the next few months, Guggenheim Securities analyst John Heinbockel wrote.

December retail sales figures released by the Department of Commerce — which showed total retail and food services sales but excluded products like automobiles, restaurants and gas stations — showed a 0.5% seasonally adjusted increase and a 4.7% year-over-year adjusted increase. General merchandise stores’ seasonally adjusted sales were unchanged month to month and decreased unadjusted 3.4% year over year, while health and personal care stores’ seasonally adjusted month-to-month sales increased 1.4% as unadjusted year-to-year sales decreased 0.7%.

"While nonstore retailers increased a hearty 11% this December, total December sales could not make up for shortfalls in certain categories like electronics," NRF chief economist Jack Kleinhenz said. "Heading into 2013, consumers could continue to think twice about their discretionary purchases as they face decreases in their paychecks and other concerns with their household budgets."

Cabela’s adds two new stores to 2014 lineup

BY Marianne Wilson

Sidney, Neb. — Cabela’s Inc. on Tuesday announced plans for two new stores, one in Greenville, S.C., and the other in Woodbury, Minn.

Cabela’s expects to open the Greenville store – its first South Carolina location – in spring 2014. The 100,000-sq.-ft. store will be located in Magnolia Park, a newly redeveloped shopping center.

The store in Woodbury, Minn., is expected to open in fall 2014. The 85,000-sq.-ft, store will be located in the Tamarack Village Shopping Center, and be Cabela’s fourth store in Minnesota.

The exterior of the two new stores will reflect Cabela’s store model with log construction, stonework, wood siding and metal roofing. A large glass storefront will allow customers to view much of the store’s interior as they approach the building. The inside will feature the company’s next-generation layout, designed to surround customers in an outdoor experience, including museum-quality wildlife displays and trophy animal mounts displayed on a mountain.
