Tesco Opens First Fresh & Easy Store

BY CSA STAFF

London, Tesco has begun its long-awaited launch in the United States. With no fanfare, the company opened its first “Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market” store late last week, according to Reuters. The store is in the small city of Hemet, which is located outside of Los Angeles.

Tesco will open five stores in Los Angeles on Thursday.

In the coming weeks, Fresh & Easy will roll out more than 120 stores across Los Angles, Las Vegas, Phoenix and San Diego.

Tesco’s U.S. launch has been widely trailed, with industry watchers predicting it could cause a shake-up of the world’s largest and most competitive consumer market.

Annapolis, Md., Westfield Annapolis unveiled Thursday its 60-store, 240,000-sq.-ft. expansion, a shopping mall makeover that includes performance apparel Under Armour Inc.’s first full-line retail shop, according to the Baltimore Business Journal.

The $150 million expansion includes a Pottery Barn, H&M, Martin + Osa, Metropark and Ann Taylor Loft.

More than 1,000 new parking spaces were also added to the mall, which now eclipses 1.5 million sq. ft. The expansion will make Westfield Annapolis one of the largest shopping centers in the Baltimore region by square footage, along with the Mall in Columbia and Arundel Mills.

The store’s entryway resembles a stadium tunnel, and a 120-in. high-definition projection screen meets shoppers.
