Toys ‘R’ Us opens new distribution center in Canada

Toronto — To better accommodate its customers in Western Canada, Toys “R” Us has partnered with SCI Logistics to open a new distribution center in Delta, British Columbia. The 180,000-sq.-ft. facility is strategically positioned to receive goods from overseas and domestic manufacturers who can now ship directly to British Columbia for distribution to local Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us stores.

“The new west coast distribution center provides us with the additional capacity and flexibility to service our customers and distribution needs in Western Canada,” said Krista Collinson, VP logistics, e-commerce & business development, Toys “R” Us, Canada.

SCI outfitted the new facility to include cross-docking, transload, order fulfillment and store replenishment capabilities, with the use of a fully automated sortation system that scales to support the large seasonal swings of the retail business. The new center adapts quickly to changing volume patterns, while achieving very high performance levels.

My daughter wanted very much baby bloomers but I could not find the ones she liked in a lot of shops, hopefully the opening of the new distribution center for Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” US stores will change the situation.

OfficeMax exec appointed to Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce board

CHICAGO — OfficeMax EVP and president of OfficeMax Workplace John Kenning has been appointed to the board of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce.

The appointment comes just seven months after Kenning joined OfficeMax to lead the retailer’s contract division that was renamed OfficeMax Marketplace earlier this month.

"I’m honored to join with my peers to advance the Chicagoland Chamber’s objectives of helping area businesses to grow and promoting the economic development of the region," said Kenning. "At OfficeMax, we believe in the extraordinary value of building relationships with other businesses and the success that can be achieved through collaboration. Our company has long been dedicated to the growth and success of Chicago, and it is my privilege to work with the Chamber Board as an advocate for creating a community of innovation and opportunity throughout the Chicagoland area."

The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, founded in 1904, is the largest chamber of commerce in Illinois and one of the largest in the nation. It boasts 2,600 members, representing over 1.3 million individual employees in the six-county Northeastern Illinois region.

OfficeMax has a strong presence in the Chicagoland area, serving local businesses and consumers through an integrated sales and customer service team. It has more than 40 stores and two distribution facilities in the immediate region. OfficeMax multi-national headquarters are also located in Naperville. OfficeMax is involved in the community through various activities that include being the title sponsor for the upcoming Hockey City Classic in Feb. 2013.

Brookstone launches tablet-optimized website

Merrimack, N.H. — Brookstone announced the launch of a new tablet-optimized website.

"In response to the growing trend of tablet shopping, Brookstone saw the importance of developing a premier tailored shopping experience for our customers to more easily navigate the site, find all the holiday gifts on their list and easily checkout," said Stephen Bebis, president and CEO of Brookstone. "We researched shopping behaviors, and incorporated the most successful retail mobile applications to enhance the experience."

The tablet site incorporates all of the existing features and functionality of its current desktop site, including rich media assets, multiple payment types, and a newly launched search. In addition, the site takes advantage of several newer, tablet-friendly features:

Streamlined page designs: Brookstone has completely redesigned the homepage, product pages, search and browse pages, showcasing site content in a manner optimized for tablet viewing.

Touch-friendly features: Shoppers will experience improved site wide navigation, image swiping, larger features, pinch and tap navigation.

Rich media content: Product pages integrate content important to shoppers, including multiple photos and videos, as they research products and make purchasing decisions.

Upgraded checkout experience: Checkout forms have been completely redesigned for touch, making the purchase experience much simpler for customers while still incorporating all of the security and privacy features provided on Brookstone.com.
