U.S. Chain Stores Sales Rose in Latest Week
New York City, Sales at major retailers were up 3.3% on a comp-store sales basis for the week ended May 20, following a 3.4% rise the prior week, according to Redbook Research. U.S. chain-store sales rose with emphasis on household staples, but an increase in gasoline prices and interest rates could lower sales in the second quarter. Thus far, sales at U.S. retailers in May were down 2.8% when compared with the same period in April.
Buy.com Appoints New CEO
Aliso Viejo, Calif., Buy.com appointed Neel Grover CEO, effective May 19, 2006. Grover served as a member of the Buy.com board of directors since November 2001, as its president since September 2003 and as its COO since October 2004. Buy.com’s founder Scott Blum will remain chairman of the board and will continue to be involved in the company’s strategic initiatives.
Federated Department Invests in IT
Orlando, Fla., Supply chain solutions provider Manhattan Associates, Inc. announced that its Integrated Logistics Solutions will support Federated Department Stores’ direct-to-consumer business—including macys.com, bloomingdales.com, Bloomingdale’s By Mail, macysweddingchannel.com and bloomingdalesweddingchannel.com. The supply chain execution and business-intelligence capabilities within Manhattan Associates’ warehouse-management, labor-management, slotting-optimization and performance-management solutions will support increasing volumes of on-line orders and enhance efficiency and customer service. As it opens its direct-to-consumer distribution center in Portland, Tenn., Federated will utilize the labor-management and slotting-optimization solutions to optimize facility resources, increase the productivity of its workforce and establish efficient processes.
