Walgreens’ Senior VP to Retire
Milwaukee Walgreen Co. said Tuesday that John Gleeson is retiring as senior VP and chief strategy officer on Feb. 29.
Gleeson, 61, was a key driver behind the drug store chain’s aggressive growth in the 1990s and the move to add health-care services to its service offerings, the company said.
Robert Zimmerman, VP of corporate development, will now lead the strategy group.
Meanwhile, Howard Atlas, a VP of store operations, has been named to the new position of VP of health and wellness integration.
Modell’s Chairman Dead at 86
New York City William Modell, the head of the family-owned Modell’s Sporting Goods chain, has died at age 86.
Modell died Thursday at a Manhattan hospital of complications from prostate cancer, the company said Friday.
Modell became chairman of the company in 1985 after taking over from his father, Henry. Under his leadership, the chain grew from four stores to 136 in about a dozen states in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic region.
A resident of Hewlett Harbor on Long Island, Modell is survived by his wife, Shelby, and two children.
Kroger and Union Local in Tentative Agreement
Memphis, Tenn. The Kroger Co. announced Thursday it has reached a tentative agreement on a new contract with the United Food & Commercial Workers Union Local 1529 in Memphis, Tenn.
The tentative agreement covers over 7,500 Kroger associates who work in 72 stores in Memphis and parts of Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee.
