Walgreens unveils newly renovated stores in Indianapolis
Deerfield, Ill. — Walgreens has transformed 68 locations in the Indianapolis market into health and daily living destinations.
The drug store chain hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday at a store located on 16th and Meridian in Indianapolis. On hand at the ceremony were Walgreens president and CEO Greg Wasson, former Indianpolis Colts coach Tony Dungy and Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind.
The stores are part of Walgreens’ pilot program that launched last year in Chicago.
“Our new health and daily living stores help people live well, stay well and get well,” Wasson said. “At the core of this approach is our effort to bring the pharmacist out from behind the counter so they can provide more counseling to patients, offer clinical services and answer questions. By advancing the role of the community pharmacist in this way, we believe we can create better health outcomes, prevent hospitalizations and save money for patients, employers, insurers and the health care system.”
The stores now tout the following innovations:
- A pharmacist located in front of the pharmacy to offer greater opportunity for patient interaction/consultation and such healthcare services as vaccinations and health testing;
- Health Guides: Walgreens staff members who are armed with an iPad and are available to answer product and service questions, help customers navigate the store and their healthcare options and sign up for events. Select stores also have a Health Corner space to host individual or group health and wellness community events;
- Fresh food, including fruits and vegetables, meats, prepared salads, sandwiches, wraps, take-and-bake pizzas and other on-the-go meal options; and
- An enhanced beauty department display, including one store with a Look Boutique featuring dozens of prestige and niche cosmetic, skin care and hair care brands.
In line with the store openings, Walgreens also announced that it has added six Take Care Clinics in Indianapolis, bringing the total number of Take Care Clinics to 14 in the area. The company noted that board-certified family nurse practitioners and physician assistants at Take Care Clinics treat patients ages 18 months and older for common illnesses, offer preventive services such as vaccines and physicals and are licensed to write prescriptions, when necessary, that can be filled at the patient’s pharmacy of choice.
Earlier this month, Walgreens opened its Chicago flagship store, which included a variety of premium offerings.
South America’s largest retailer selects SAP solution to help manage carbon emissions and energy consumption
New York City — The Grupo Pao de Acucar, the largest retailer in South America, has selected the SAP Carbon Impact OnDemand solution to monitor and manage carbon emissions and energy consumption in each of its 1,832 stores. The solution, from SAP, will help the group, long recognized as a sustainability leader for retailers both in Latin America and globally, to more effectively control greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and increase the data quality of environmental reports submitted to financial and sustainability regulatory agencies.
The announcement was made at the National Retail Federation’s 101st Annual Convention & Expo, being held Jan. 15-18 in New York City.
Since 2008, The Grupo Pao de Acucar has been committed to sustainable business practices, including reducing waste, encouraging recycling and re-use of recycled materials, and developing sustainable products and production processes. SAP Carbon Impact OnDemand will help the company mitigate its environmental footprint and further its sustainability goals.
"Before selecting SAP Carbon Impact OnDemand, we used an external firm to collect and report on this information," said Hugo Bethlem, VP, The Grupo Pao de Acucar. "The new solution will allow us to bring this process in-house, making it more efficient and providing us with more operational control. We will gain both valuable insight and a robust tool for proactively managing emissions and energy consumption. The Grupo Pao de Acucar will be one of the first retail companies in Latin America to inventory its carbon emissions. From this measurement, we will be able to create plans to reduce the GHG emissions and carbon footprint of our operations."
McDonald’s awarded LEED Gold
Riverside, Calif. — A McDonald’s restaurant in Riverside, Calif., has been LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certified. It is the chain’s first location west of the Mississippi, and only the fourth in the United States, to receive the prestigious designation. Other LEED-certified McDonald’s restaurants are located in Cary, N.C., Savannah, Ga. and Chicago.
The restaurant, the first LEED Gold certified restaurant in the city of Riverside, is owned and operated by Tom and Candace Spiel and stood as a McDonald’s for 44 years. In August 2010, it was completely rebuilt and subsequently reopened with a host of "green" features, including low-flow plumbing fixtures, recycled denim insulation inside the building, native drought tolerant plants to reduce water consumption by landscape and solar panels.
The restaurant’s solar array has generated electrical energy, which saves approximately 8,950 kWH per month of utility usage. Increased efficiencies such as low-E glass windows and LED lighting helped realize an additional energy savings of 2,870 kWH per month.
Due to permeable pavers, about 283,000 gallons of rainfall water is diverted from storm water system per year.
The restaurant also includes an interactive touchscreen display for visitors to learn about the building’s features, environmental sustainability, and how individuals can reduce their carbon footprint.
