Walmart Neighborhood Market to be lit entirely with LEDs

Durham, N.C. — When Walmart Neighborhood Market in Mt. Pleasant, Wis., opens later this year, it will join the small but growing ranks of stores that are lit entirely with LEDs. The chain is installing LED technology from Cree, including more than 400 linear luminaires (CS18), for illumination – from the sales floor and pharmacy to restrooms, vestibules and backroom areas. Cree LED lighting will also be installed in the parking lot and exterior areas of the store.

Walmart estimates that CS18 suspended luminaires, designed for low maintenance and long life, will save approximately 30% in energy costs compared to interior fluorescent lighting. Lasting more than three times longer than standard fluorescents, the luminaires will also enable significant maintenance reductions and energy savings for the store.

The high-efficiency CS18 suspended LED linear luminaire uses approximately 30 percent less energy s. The CS18 luminaire will bring an extraordinary combination of performance, aesthetics and optimal light distribution to the sales floor of the Mt. Pleasant Walmart Neighborhood Market.

Walmart expands solar installations in Hawaii

Kapolei, Hawaii — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced Wednesday that, together with SunEdison, it has completed new solar power installations at three Walmart stores in Kahului, Kailua-Kona and Kapolei, Hawaii, doubling the total number of stores in Hawaii powered by renewable solar energy.

The installations contribute to Wal-Mart’s objective of being supplied 100% by renewable energy. Similar installations are already in operation atop the Honolulu Sam’s Club and Mililani Walmart on Oahu, and the Lihue Walmart on Kauai.

During the first full year of production, the 311 kilowatt solar power rooftop system on each store will produce more than 400,000 kilowatt hours of solar electricity. Each rooftop system will eliminate 320 metric tons of CO2e annually. That means the three systems combined, over a 10-year period, will eliminate 9600 metric tons. One year of operation for each rooftop system is equivalent to removing 67 cars off the road for one year. That means the three systems combined will remove the equivalent of 2,010 cars over a 10-year period.

Rose Paving Co. to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at SPECS 2013

Bridgeview, Ill. — Rose Paving Company is set to support the efforts of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital through a multi-event fundraising campaign in 2013. Rose Paving will host a fundraising activity at industry trade shows and events across the country, giving registered attendees the opportunity to help support St. Jude’s mission to find cures for children with cancer and other deadly diseases through research and treatment.

Fundraising will kick off in February at an expo in Chicago, Illinois, followed by fundraising at two conferences in Texas, including Chain Store Age’s SPECS show, which will be held March 17 – 20, at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, and continuing at events in California and Georgia. SPECS conference attendees are encouraged to visit Rose Paving’s booth number 101 during exhibit hours and autograph a banner in support of St. Jude. For each signature received, Rose Paving will donate $5 to St. Jude.

“We are excited to help raise awareness and funds to support the mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which is to find cures and save children,” said C.B. Kuzlik, SVP, Rose Paving. “After a very successful fundraising campaign in 2012, we are grateful for the opportunity to continue our efforts throughout 2013.”
