West Marine opens flagship store in Jacksonville
Watsonville, Calif. West Marine has opened its largest store to date, a 30,000-sq.-ft. prototype in Jacksonville, Fla.
The store aimed at boasters, sailors, anglers and water-sports enthusiasts is about four-times larger than the company’s average size store and will offer 16,000 national and local products, compared with 7,000 to 8,000 products in the average store.
Designed by Columbus, Ohio-based Chute Gerdeman, the new West Marine has a nautical-styled interior and has several unique features, including a two-story, 300-sq.-ft. flybridge and an indoor fishing shack.
The store also has skylights designed to reduce the need for electricity as part of the company’s overall goal of energy efficiency.
Supervalu unveils program to ease meal planning
MINNEAPOLIS Supervalu has launched “Simply Good Meals” — new easy-to-recognize, branded destinations within its family of stores where consumers can go to find complete easy-to-make meal solutions in one spot.
The program is designed to help consumers create a balanced meal for the family by bringing all the components together in one area.
Most stores will initially feature up to four Simply Good Meals destinations, including two in the produce area, one in the meat section and one in the deli department. Some stores will also have additional meal and soup destinations in the deli area.
“Research shows that most people don’t know at 4 o’clock what they are having for dinner that night, and in many cases, these hurry-up meals result in less-than-balanced and more expensive food choices,” said Jim Smits, Supervalue group VP fresh foods merchandising. “We wanted to make it easier for our customers to answer that inevitable ‘what’s for dinner’ question by providing them with simple, convenient, affordable ideas for creating a real home-cooked meal.”
