Think twice before suing Walmart

BY CSA STAFF

Not that anyone ever forgets Walmart is a really big company, but every now and then a fresh reminder surfaces. That was the case this week with an announcement by Datacert, Inc., that Walmart had selected its Passport technology platform to help manage domestic legal processes and systems. Big companies that make a lot of money tend to get sued a lot, and in Walmart’s case the situation is magnified by the fact that it has more than two million employees interacting each week with 200 million customers in its 8,000 stores.

Now the company has on its side a new technology provider in Datacert, which bills itself as the premier global provider of enterprise legal management solution. The company contends its Passport technology platform is the only enterprise legal management platform available that allows the most expansive law departments to integrate all legal technology solutions in one space, including complementary software that supports other business processes and will provide the retail organization with enhanced visibility into its legal-related business and improve collaboration internally and with outside legal firms.

“A detailed review of key legal department management systems helped us determine that it was time to upgrade our existing spend and matter management systems to embrace more current technologies and features, and to implement a platform that simplifies the integration of other best-in-class legal department management systems," said Ken Vermilion, senior director Walmart. “Following an extensive RFP process, we selected Passport because it proved to be the only platform with the comprehensive capabilities to meet our current requirements and easily evolve to support our future needs. The ease of configuration and integration that Passport offers, combined with user-friendly features in Datacert’s matter management system, will help us greatly enhance legal process efficiency.”

And now for a few programming notes

BY CSA STAFF

The fourth installment of family movie night, a collaboration between Walmart and Procter & Gamble, is set to air Jan. 8 at 8 p.m. EST on Fox. The movie is called Change of Plans, and the plot line revolves around how lives can be turned upside down with a phone call. Also of interest is an upcoming CNBC special on Target, but more on that later.

In Change of Plans, the lead character in the movie finds out that her best friend from college died in a tragic accident while serving in the Peace Corps and she has been named legal guardian of her friend’s four children. The kicker is three of them were adopted from third-world countries and the new parents must help the kids deal with culture clashes and life in America. P&G describes the story as a humorous and heartwarming tales that reveals how fulfilling life can be when you look beyond your own plans and invest in the lives of others.

Those who aren’t in to humorous and heartwarming can tune in the following week when CNBC is scheduled to air, “Target: Inside the Bullseye,” on Thursday, Jan.13, at 9 p.m. EST. Walmart has received the CNBC treatment twice. First, with The Age of Walmart and then there was The New Age of Walmart. “Inside the Bullseye” will rerun several times Thursday even and again on Jan.15 at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.
