Here are the 154 Penney stores that will soon close
J.C. Penney Co. has identified the first wave of its store closures.
The ailing retailer, which filed for bankruptcy protection on May 15, said store closing sales will begin at 154 locations after a June 11 bankruptcy-related hearing in Texas. The closures are expected to take 10 to 16 weeks to complete.
J.C. Penney, which is expected to close a total of 242 stores this summer as part of its Chapter 11 restructuring process, will announce additional closings during the coming weeks. The retailer said the closures will allow it to focus resources on its strongest stores and e-commerce site.
“While closing stores is always an extremely difficult decision, our store optimization strategy is vital to ensuring we emerge from both Chapter 11 and the COVID-19 pandemic as a stronger retailer with greater financial flexibility to allow us to continue serving our loyal customers for decades to come,” stated CEO Jill Soltau.
