Bloomfield Hills, Mich. -- The Mall at University Town Center has opened in Sarasota, Fla. Featuring more than 100 retailers and restaurants, well over half of which are unique to the Sarasota-Manatee market. The Mall at UTC is the only newly built enclosed regional shopping center to open in the United States this year.
Dublin, Calif. –- Ross Stores opened 20 new Ross Dress for Less and eight new DD’s Discounts stores across 14 different states in September and October. These new locations are part of the off-price retailer’s plans to add a total of approximately 75 Ross and 20 DD’s Discounts stores during 2014.
Birmingham, Ala. -- Brookwood Village, a mixed-use development located in the affluent Mountain Brook and Homewood area of Birmingham, Ala., announced that leading specialty bedding company Mattress Firm will join the shopping center’s merchant roster in 2015.
New York -- Winick Realty Group has leased two retail storefronts in the Nolita neighborhood of New York. The 700-sq.-ft. spaces were previously ground-floor apartments and had never housed retail before.
Gainesville, Fla. -- Celebration Pointe has begun site work on a five-lane, $12 million bridge that will span Interstate 75. Celebration Pointe partner Ralph Contimade the announcement.
Montclair, N.J. -- Regional comfort food, gourmet sandwiches and chocolates are coming to downtown Montclair. Pinnacle Companies Realty Group, a subsidiary of The Pinnacle Companies and the exclusive broker for The Siena, announced today that three new retailers are opening soon at The Siena luxury mixed-use community on South Park and Church Streets: Chocolate Works, the Heritage House restaurant and Jimmy John's gourmet sandwiches.
Las Vegas -- Cushman & Wakefield | Commerce has been awarded the leasing assignment for Pawn Plaza in Las Vegas, Nevada. The new retail project will be located along Las Vegas Boulevard next to the World-Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, which is featured on cable channel History’s No. 1 show, “Pawn Stars.”

With mixed-use development (and redevelopment) a continued trend, complex multi-stage projects are an increasingly common feature on the civic landscape of towns and cities across the country. Consequently, many planning authorities are asking for (and, in some cases, demanding) much more than just basic sketch plans before signing off on a project.
Community shopping centers are evolving to become more than service providers to a neighborhood or trade area. Designed and merchandised correctly, they are fostering a sense of community and building experience.
