Old coach has restaurant game plan, needs QB to run it

6/26/2019
As the winningest football coach in University of Florida history, Steve Spurrier was known to shoot from the hip with his “Fun ‘n Gun” offense. And so it is with his budding career as a restaurateur.

Celebration Pointe, a new town center in UF’s home town of Gainesville, has announced that it has signed a lease with the coach to open Spurrier’s in an 8,400-sq.-ft. space in June of 2020. That’s a fast-paced game plan considering the American dining concept has no set menu and no experienced food and beverage operator to run it.

Coach Spurrier is in recruitment mode.

“I’ve always sought out the finest teammates, players, and coaches during my football career. Now it’s time to draft a first-class restaurant operator with a desire to be the best and bring an exceptional dining and social experience to the Gainesville region,” Spurrier said.

The chosen partner—which the coach stipulated must be an all-star industry veteran—will receive a million-dollar buildout budget, the ability to influence the final restaurant menu and décor, and salary and/or equity in the venture.

Spurrier said his business style is friendly, but aggressive, which he urges candidates to consider before applying for the starting position, which they can do here. Recruiting deadline is July 30.
