Department store retailer strengthens Iowa roots
Von Maur is building a new store in its home state.
Von Maur Department Stores announced it plans to open a two-level store at Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines, Iowa, in fall 2022. The new location will continue the retailer’s successful growth strategy within its traditional Midwestern roots and beyond, which has seen it expand to 32 stores across 15 states.
“Our journey has led us to levels of success my great-grandfather could never have imagined when he started Von Maur,” said Jim von Maur, president of Von Maur, which was founded in 1872 in downtown Davenport, Iowa. “No matter how far we’ve come over those years and the new markets we’ve entered, for myself, our family and our associates, Iowahas always been home.
Jordan Creek Town Center is one of the largest super-regional malls and lifestyle centers in Iowa. It is owned and operated by GGP Inc.
“The addition of Von Maur to our growing list of tenants is a natural partnership,” said Randy Tennison, senior general manager of Jordan Creek Town Center. “Von Maur’s Iowa-based roots showcase how our shopping center is curated to feature the brands and experiences that our community wants.
Publix announces second location for new format
Publix Super Markets is looking to expand in the organic and natural foods space.
The grocery retailer has selected Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, as the second location for its new GreenWise Market concept, which focuses on the specialty, natural and organic sector. The 25,000-sq.-ft. store is expected to open in early 2019.
Publix announced plans earlier this year to reignite its GreenWise store concept, with the first location due to open in Tallahassee, Florida, in 2018. The store is currently under construction.
The grocer launched the format in 2007, and currently operates three stores under the banner. But it has not opened a new GreenWise location since 2008.
Publix plans to share additional details about its reworked GreenWise format closer to the inaugural store opening. The company did say it continues to look for additional GreenWise Market locations throughout its operating areas.
“We’re creating an environment where fresh, specialty, natural and organic food is celebrated,” stated Kevin Murphy, Publix senior VP of retail operations, in a release about the Mount Pleasant store. “We’ll have something for everyone, from the indulgent foodie ready to discover something new to the health-conscious shopper seeking fresh, high-quality ingredients.”
Upscale jeweler reopens in popular Boston shopping destination
David Yurman has reopened the doors to its new, expanded boutique in Boston’s Copley Place.
Designed by the Yurmans, the 2,500 sq. ft. space reflects the brand’s aesthetic and the family’s unique artistic expression. The entrance lobby features a heritage wall that visually narrates the Yurmans’ journey from art to jewelry, and features examples of David Yurman’s early sculptures and wearable art pieces alongside more current designs.
The store’s interior was inspired by the colors of the brand’s most iconic gemstones and the hues in Sybil Yurman’s paintings, which are hung throughout the space. These shades are found throughout the boutique through the use of rich fabric upholstery that covers vintage and custom-made furnishings.
In the main sales area, Mayflower plaster motifs — the Massachusetts state flower — were hand-applied over white gold leaf. They are also featured on decorative panels, offering a subdued elegance.
Other distinct features include the use of wood plank formed concrete on the store’s façade, a men’s jewelry area and a private salon. The men’s area has a distinctly masculine feel created through the use of darker materials and found objects.
The vintage furniture and decorative elements alongside simple, natural materials are a nod to Evan Yurman’s creative workspace and men’s showroom, Noumenon, in New York.
David Yurman’s Copley Place boutique is one of more than 350 locations.
