Beauty start-up uses AR, AI to help customers choose hair color

Madison Reed wants its customers to put their selfies to better use.

The digitally-native start-up, which makes and markets its own hair color products, now enables customers to virtually try more than 40 Madison Reed hair colors. The technology, from Perfect Corp., presents a palette of hair colors on a live, virtual, try-on tool that is powered by proprietary augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI) and color-matching technologies.

By using their device’s live camera or uploading a selfie, customers can access a split screen that will highlight the difference between their current hair color and a new, virtual shade. The split screen also has a built-in slider that allows the user to toggle between two colors in real-time.

Women will be able to instantly envision a major color change, or a subtle shift in shade or tone, according to the company.

“Madison Reed believes in empowering our customers in every way imaginable,” said Amy Errett, CEO and founder of Madison Reed.

“Our goal is to eliminate any fear factor and enable people to choose a new hair color with the confidence of having already witnessed the end result,” Errett said. “Women have been begging for this try-on technology, but current solutions just don't hit the mark. Now, an accurate, realistic solution finally exists on Madison-Reed.com.”

Madison Reed its further expanding reach through an increasing brick-and-mortar footprint. In June 2017, Madison Reed opened its first Color Bar, adjacent to its headquarters in San Francisco’s Mission District. In October, it opened a Color Bar in Manhattan. The company plans to open 25 locations by the end of 2019.
