7-Eleven Japan is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to measure customer interaction with in-store ads.

The Japanese operator and franchisor of 7-Eleven convenience stores in Japan is implementing a Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (SSS) edge AI-driven solution at 500 locations to better understand the performance of in-store advertising.

The SSS solution uses edge devices with on-sensor AI processing to automatically collect datapoints such as the number of shoppers who enter the detection area, whether they saw the signage, the amount of customers who stopped to view the signage, and how long they watched for. The system does not output image data capable of identifying any individual shopper to help protect customer privacy.

The acquired data is then sent to a back-end system where it’s combined with content streaming information and purchasing data to conduct analysis of advertising effectiveness. The SSS solution includes compact edge devices equipped with its proprietary IMX500 vision sensor with AI-processing capabilities. The IMX500 sensor also handles AI computing, resulting in simplified device configuration that helps streamline device maintenance and reduce costs of installation.

SSS developed and operates the tool on the AITRIOS 2 edge AI-sensing platform with Console Enterprise Edition, which is installed on a hosted Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure. This configuration offers system customizability and security benefits, since there is no need to send or process any data outside 7-Eleven Japan.
