PetSmart went out to sea to find a marketing head.

The pet supplies and services retailer has appointed Joshua Kanter as executive VP of marketing and customer experience. He joins PetSmart from Viking Cruises, where he served as senior VP of marketing strategy.

At PetSmart, Kanter will report directly to Raymond Svider, executive chairman. Svider has been overseeing the company’s operations since August, following the resignation of CEO Michael J. Massey. The retailer is conducting a hunt for a new CEO.

Kanter will oversee all aspects of PetSmart’s brand marketing, digital, media and creative. Prior to Viking Cruises, Kantar held the role of senior VP of marketing at Caesars Entertainment and earlier, he was an associate principal at McKinsey & Company.

“Joshua is a highly experienced executive with a proven track record of building successful consumer-facing brands,” said Raymond Svider, executive chairman, PetSmart, which operates some 1,600 stores. “We continue to position the business for success as the leading brick-and-mortar and online company in pet specialty retail, and we are confident Joshua is the right leader to support our unique mission and brand.”
