Klarna launches monthly subscription plan in U.S.

Klarna Plus subscription
Klarna has a new subcription plan for U.S. shoppers.

A global payments network and shopping assistant is entering into the U.S. subscription service market.

Known as Klarna Plus and issued by WebBank, this subscription offering is now available to eligible U.S. consumers through the Klarna app for a monthly fee of $7.99.

Klarna Plus provides access to a variety of features and offers, including waived service fees on Klarna’s One Time Card single use payment product; double rewards points ($2 for every $1 spent on purchases with the Klarna rewards club); and access to special deals with select brands including Nike, Coach, Macy’s, Instacart and GOAT, totaling up to $30 per month.

In addition, consumers who sign up for Klarna Plus can take advantage of a welcome offer, saving $8 on their first Klarna Plus purchase.

In the past 12 months, Klarna has rolled out other new solutions and offerings, including:

AI-based shopping tools

In October 2023, Klarna unveiled a set of 13 AI-based shopping solutions. These included the ability to scan the barcodes of more than 10 million products across stores for instant access to product information and pay by scanning a QR code, enhanced in-app purchase protection, express refunds, and an in-app gift card store.

New sustainability tools

In June 2023, Klarna released a set of new and updated solutions designed to enable consumers to make more informed purchasing decisions and take sustainable actions. A top-up donations feature lets consumers add a $1 donation to purchases made using Klarna's interest-free Pay in 4 service at integrated retail partners, both online and in the Klarna app. And an upgraded carbon dioxide tracker in the app provides enhanced breakdown of a product's CO2 emissions, from raw material extraction and processing to product assembly and delivery to the end user.

The tracker also offers educational tips on prolonging the life of products and how to reduce CO2 emissions when using products, such as following care labels and repairing worn items.

"Today marks an exciting milestone for Klarna with the introduction of our first-ever premium subscription service, ’Klarna Plus,” said David Sandstrom, chief marketing officer, Klarna. "Our research indicates that dedicated Klarna users are looking for an enhanced shopping experience through a subscription model. Klarna Plus addresses this demand, allowing us to deepen our engagement with 37 million loyal U.S. consumers, while also further diversifying a portfolio of payment and shopping solutions."
