Ethically-sourced Brilliant Earth expanding in brick-and-mortar
Another online retailer has made the jump to the physical space.
Brilliant Earth announced plans to open three new locations, in San Diego, California; Washington, D.C.; and Denver, during the spring and summer. The new showrooms will join the retailer’s five other existing locations in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston and Chicago.
Founded online in San Francisco in 2005, Brilliant Earth specializes in fine jewelry pieces with diamonds and gemstones that go beyond conflict free and originate from mines that adhere to strict labor and environmental standards. Each piece is handcrafted from recycled precious metals and set with beyond conflict free diamonds and colored gemstones
In addition to fair sourcing practices, the company donates five percent of profits to help communities impacted by the jewelry trade build a brighter future.
Brilliant Earth’s brick-and-mortar strategy calls for small footprint locations in downtown urban settings, with an appointment model that allows for a high-touch, personalized interaction via one-hour consultations with a jewelry specialist. Customers can personalize their ring setting, selectin the setting, metal type and center gemstone or dim (Walk-in customers are also welcome.)
The showrooms maintain a light inventory, and customers can place their orders while they are in the showroom or afterwards, online. There are also some items available for immediate purchase, including pre-set engagement rings, vintage one-of-a-kind pieces, and fine jewelry such as diamond and gemstone pendants, earrings and bracelets.
The first of Brilliant Earth’s upcoming three locations will open in late March, at the open-air La Plaza La Jolla in San Diego. The 2,000-sq.-ft. space will include French doors that open onto a terrace with ocean views, and a Southern California ambiance that also reflects the center’s Spanish-Moroccan architectural elements.
In April, Brilliant Earth will open at Cady's Alley, in Georgetown. The 2,500 square-foot showroom will have a loft feel, with high ceilings, glass walls and exposed brick.
Brilliant Earth’s 2,000-sq.-ft. Denver location is scheduled to open this summer. The space is lined with windows to create a light-filled, spa-like atmosphere.

Off-pricer to open 90 stores in 2017
Ross Stores continues to maintain an aggressive store expansion strategy.
The retailer recently opened 23 Ross Dress for Less stores and five dd's Discounts stores across 15 different states in February and March. The new locations are part of the company's plans to add approximately 70 Ross stores and 20 dd's locations during 2017.
"These new spring stores further strengthen our presence in the Midwest, which accounts for approximately one-quarter of these openings, and includes initial entry into our newest state of Iowa,” said Jim Fassio, president and chief development officer. “We also continue to see opportunity to grow in our largest states with new locations in California, Florida and Texas.”
With the new openings, Ross now operate a total of 1,561 Ross Dress for Less and 198 dd's stores across 37 states, the District of Columbia, and Guam.
“Looking ahead, we remain confident that over time, Ross can grow to 2,000 locations and dd's can become a chain of 500 stores,” said Fassio.
Based in Dublin, California, Ross had fiscal 2016 revenues of $12.9 billion.

Likewise, a recent Toast consumer study found that credit or debit card is also the preferred payment method for 76% of dine-in restaurant goers, especially when paying for higher-end ticket items versus smaller transactions, like a cup of coffee.
All of these transactions put the money of your business and your customers at risk if you’re not using the proper technology, which is why credit card processing is one of the biggest areas of interest for data thieves looking to access customer payment card information.
The strategy for restaurant and retail business owners is to put themselves in the best position to have a secure environment and stay ahead of threats at the point of sale. Below are four key steps companies can take to best support and maintain a secure place of business.
Become PCI compliant
Payment Card Industry (or PCI) compliance is obtained by following a set of standards to “ensure that all companies that accept, process, store, or transmit credit card information maintain a secure environment.” PCI compliance adds an extra blanket of security wherever possible so your customers can feel safe when their card runs through your location’s processor.
Becoming PCI compliant is the first step your business should take on its journey to becoming more secure. According to the PCI Security Standards Council, the aftermath of a data breach could entail lost jobs for C-level executives, high legal costs, lost sales and customer trust, and even going out of business entirely. Clearly, the potential downsides of hacks for non-PCI compliant businesses are too great to ignore.
Protect payment info with credit card encryption
Hackers love a good trail – so don’t leave any breadcrumbs for them to follow. Modern point of sale systems (POS) have the feature of immediate encryption for credit card information when the card swipes. This means that everything is transferred through the credit card transaction process securely.
Assuring encryption from the first stages of the transaction lets you and your customers take solace in the security of the transaction. This is because encrypting a credit card number in the card reader hardware does not allow hackers to install malware on your network. At that point, there's nothing of interest for hackers looking for credit card payment to access.
Choose cloud-based systems for secure data storage
Cloud-based POS systems have made a huge impact on the restaurant and retail industries. Not only do they offer more convenient features and remarkable ease-of-use, they are also far more secure than legacy POS systems when it comes to protecting data. When your information is stored in the cloud, that means all private data is stored off-site, and customer credit card information is instantaneously transferred to the next step in the payment process.
In contrast, legacy POS systems store information in the technology itself, on-site in your business location’s back office. This makes customer data much more vulnerable as it can be far too easily accessed by the wrong people. In addition to a cloud POS’s secure storage of data off-site, another benefit of these modern systems is the ability to monitor your place of business at all times and detect unusual activity.
Update and evolve to stay ahead of hackers
The good and bad news about technology is that it is always evolving. Criminal masterminds never stop trying to find a backdoor to a goldmine of data, which means defending that data is harder than ever. It’s in the best interest of your business to work with a technology company that keeps security advancements and updates both fresh and frequent.
Modern POS companies are typically a SaaS (software as a service) model.
