Kohl’s gets a jump on holiday hiring

BY Marianne Wilson

In a tight labor market, it’s never too early to get a jump on holiday hiring — even if it is the middle of summer.

Kohl’s Corp. announced that, starting July 17, it will begin hiring for an “early wave” of seasonal positions across 500 stores, which is nearly double the number of locations that participated in the company’s early hiring initiative last year. The rest of Kohl’s stores, along with its nine distribution and five e-commerce fulfillment centers, will begin seasonal hiring later this summer in August.

Seasonal employees who start in summer to help with the back-to-school season will remain with Kohl’s through the holidays. The retailer said the employees will be trained in the use of current retail technologies, including hand-held mobile devices to help customers browse and buy from Kohl’s online or check out anywhere in-store, as well as devices that help associates locate and process online and pick-up orders. Kohl’s is also hiring approximately 3,000 employees across all stores nationwide to help support omnichannel and customer service functions.

“Our early seasonal hiring strategy positions Kohl’s for success during the back half of the year and ensures our store teams are fully staffed and trained to meet the needs of our customers during the holiday season,” said Marc Chini, Kohl’s senior executive VP, chief people officer.

In addition, Kohl’s will begin hiring in October to staff its expanded 130-store “omni power center” pilot with up to 50 seasonal positions per store. The in-store centers are designed to enhance Kohl’s fulfillment capabilities by equipping them with technology and process enhancements to allow associates to be more efficient in fulfilling digital orders. Associates will help operate the localized e-commerce fulfillment to quickly meet omnichannel customer demand, including fulfilling online orders in-store and processing pick-up orders.

Kohl’s is also hiring full- and part-time associates for five new stores it will open this fall. The stores are located in Willmar, Minn.; Plattsburgh, N.Y.; London, Ky.; Indiana, Pa; and Lafayette, Colo.
