Primark to continue U.S. expansion with Midwest debut

7/8/2019
Primark is expanding its fledgling U.S. footprint.

The value-focused fashion retailer will open its first store in the Midwest, in downtown Chicago. Primark will take over a 45,000-sq.-ft. building in the heart of the Loop (35 N. State Street). Before the opening date is announced, the site will undergo a total renovation, including modernization of the exterior and complete interior remodeling. It is the largest lease on State Street since 2014, according to the property’s developer, The Georgetown Company.

Primark, based in Ireland and owned by Associated British Foods, opened its first U.S. store in 2015, in Boston. The retailer now has nine U.S. locations, all in the Northeast. As previously announced, Primark is on track to open stores at Sawgrass Malls, Sunrise, Florida, and at the upcoming American Dream mega-mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey, during the next 12 months.

“Primark has been searching for a Midwest location as part of the company’s continued expansion into the United States,” said Tom Meager, property director for Primark. “We are fortunate to have found and secured such an impressive location in the heart of the vibrant Chicago market.”

Founded in 1969, Primark offers a diverse range of the latest trends — at bargain prices — in clothing for women, men, and children along with homeware, accessories and beauty products. It currently has over 370 stores, with over 15 million square feet of selling space, across 12 countries. Among its newest locations is a massive, 160,100-sq.-ft. store in Birmingham, England.

Primark’s U.S. locations include the following: Downtown Crossing, Boston; King of Prussia Mall and Willow Grove Mall in Pennsylvania; Freehold Raceway Mall in New Jersey; Danbury Fair Mall in Connecticut; South Shore Braintree and Burlington Mall in Massachusetts; and Staten Island Mall and Kings Plaza Shopping Center, in New York.
