Simon mall to install automated retailing system

Miami — Shoppers at The Falls, in Miami, will be able to pick up personal care and over-the-counter items without ever entering a store.

The Falls, owned by Simon Properties, is due to install a self-service automated kiosk, called Pharmabox, that carries over 140 of top selling brands and products. The mix in the high-tech vending machine includes cold and allergy medicines, stomach and digestive medicines, men's and women's personal health items, contraceptives, pediatric medicines, suntan lotions, vitamins, batteries, hair care, soaps, facial products, cleansers, moisturizers, and much more.

"We are pleased to be in such a prominent and prestigious location as The Falls," said Alejandro Rodriguez, Founder and CEO Pharmabox. "Now shoppers can pick up their personal items and OTC medicines while they are at this wonderful destination, and avoid having to make a separate trip to another store."

It’s not your typical Williams-Sonoma

San Francisco — Williams-Sonoma is spicing up its store format.

The retailer’s new store in Ponce City Market, Atlanta, features a direct opening to a dining venture by celebrity chef Jonathan Waxman. The adjacent restaurant, due to open in the fall, is being outfitted by Williams-Sonoma. A glass wall strategically placed between the restaurant and Williams-Sonoma will offer shoppers an exclusive view into the dining room, and also give them inspiration while they shop. The floor plan is the first in Williams-Sonoma’s history with an independent business.

“The partnership we’ve established with Jamestown (the national real estate investment and management company is the owner of Ponce City) for our Ponce City Market store is unprecedented,” said Williams-Sonoma president Janet Hayes. “This location represents a shared vision for a completely new retail experience that brings together the community to shop, cook, dine and be entertained. We’re thrilled with the opportunity to collaborate with chef Jonathan Waxman as well on his restaurant and for the excitement he will bring to our culinary program here.”

The new store has over 6,500 sq. ft. of retail space, including an expansive home showroom — its eighth to date — with a design center offering complimentary design services. The new location also features an extensive assortment of artisan-made regional food items.

Also, every Saturday shoppers are invited in for free technique cooling classes at a 12-seat cooking island in the center of the store. Younger aspiring cooks are invited to the store every Sunday for free “Junior Chef Classes.”

Target bringing its flexible format to Queens

New York — Target Corp. is getting rid of its CityTarget and TargetExpress signage, but it is definitely keeping its flexible format store strategy.

The discounter said it will open a smaller-sized store in Forest Hills, Queens, in July 2016. Located near a transit stop, the two-level, 21,000-sq.-ft. location will also be easily accessible on foot or by car. It will include a tailored assortment that caters to city dwellers, including home products idea for single family homes and condos.

In addition, it will offer easy fulfillment options such as the retailer’s Store Pickup option.

The Queens store is one of two location Target will open in the Big Apple in 2016, with the other being a 100,000plus-sq.-ft. store in downtown Brooklyn.
