Uniqlo to enter Canada

1/26/2015

New York -- Uniqlo will enter Canada in the fall of 2016, opening a store at Yorkdale Shopping Centre, Toronto, and one at the Toronto Eaton Centre. Uniqlo's annoucement that it will enter Canada comes shortly after Target announced plans to close its stores north of the border.

Uniqlo, which is owned by Japan's Fast Retailing, is well-experienced in international expansion. It currently operates some 1,500 stores, with locations in Japan, Australia, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the U.K. and the United States.

“Uniqlo is growing and I thought — we all thought — that Canada was a terrific market, especially starting in Toronto,” said Larry Meyer, CEO of Uniqlo USA and Canada, in a Toronto Star report. “It’s in reasonable proximity to our New York City flagship store on 5th [Ave.] and we thought it would be a natural expansion.

Meyer hopes to expand the brand to Vancouver and other Canadian cities.
