Fast-growing RaceTrac in milestone store opening

RaceTrack has opened its 500th store — and it’s not stopping there.

The convenience store operator opened its 500th store, in Hapeville, Georgia.

Three additional RaceTrac stores are opening this week, with locations in Lafayette, Louisiana; Fellsmere, Florida; and Brunswick, Georgia.

“We are thrilled to reach this incredible milestone,” said Billy Milam, president of RaceTrac. “In 2018, we’ve continued on a tremendous growth trajectory with 54 new stores opening by the end of the year.”

RaceTrac will drive this momentum into 2019 as it breaks ground in a new market. The company plans to open at least 50 stores in the Nashville area by 2023. (In 2018, RaceTrac announced its expansion into Tennessee.)

RaceTrac has had a big year. In addition to opening its 500th store , the company is in the process of transitioning to completely franchise-operated RaceWay stores. It also opened its first Expanded Diesel Offering store.

Headquartered in Atlanta, family-owned RaceTrac operates 500 convenience stores locations in Georgia, Florida, Louisiana and Texas.

Giant Food in store upgrade and expansion program

Giant Food is upgrading its store experience.

The supermarket retailer announced a $175 million capital investment into expansion and improvement over the next two years. The investment include one new store and 24 remodels. These efforts are in addition to the recently announced $21 million investment into a new location in Olney, Md., set to to open in spring 2019.

“We look forward to updating and enhancing our existing stores and constructing both new and replacement locations to give our shoppers a fresh and imaginative selection, unique in-store experiences and superior customer service,” said Gordon Reid, president, Giant Food, Landover, Md., which operates 164 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.

The new store will be located in Fairfax Circle, Va. Giant opened two new stores in Virginia — in the towns of Herndon and  Alexandria — earlier this month.

Giant’s upgrade efforts will include remodeling 24 store locations to feature new amenities such as enhanced perishable, produce, beer, wine and spirits offerings, full-service florists, expanded natural and organic departments, hot Asian food bars, fresh squeezed juice bars, enhanced check-out zones, full-service pharmacies and more.

Ikea to bring new store concept to U.S.

Ikea is finally dropping anchor in the Big Apple — but not with its typical format.

Ikea will open its first-ever city-focused location in the United States next spring, in Manhattan. The store, called Ikea Planning Studio, will feature smart solutions for urban living and small spaces. It is designed to give customers the opportunity to discover, select and order Ikea products for delivery to their home.

Ikea opened its first store under the Planning Studio banner in October, in London. The shop, which specializes in kitchens and bedroom furniture, displays just a tiny portion of Ikea’s range of goods, all of which can be ordered online. It offers shoppers one-on-one advice with store staff. Nothing is available for take home the same day.

The new, scaled-down format reflects Ikea’s ongoing transformation and commitment to urban areas as it looks to be more accessible and convenient for all customers, regardless of where they live. The company recently announced plans to develop 30 locations in city centers during the next three years.

“We recognize that we are in a rapidly changing retail environment, and to be fit for long-term growth, Ikea is transforming in a way that lets us meet our customers where they are,” said Lars Petersson, country manager, Ikea retail U.S. “New York City is the natural choice to open the first city center store – the most vibrant, dynamic city in the US, and the epicenter of retail, business, and culture.”

The Manhattan store will open as Ikea U.S. has been making significant investments to enhance its e-commerce experience and service offerings, including click & collect, financing and TaskRabbit furniture assembly services.  Also, in January 2018, Ikea began rolling out a new, lower-priced shipping and delivery option starting at $29. Customers can purchase all that they want – the charge is the same regardless of weight and size.
