First Look: Target’s small-format hits the college campuses

8/1/2018
Target Corp. has gone off to school.

So far this year, the retailer has opened seven small-format stores on or near college campuses, with three more due to open by the end of 2018. Each store is designed for quick and convenient trips, features a curated assortment of products and experiences designed to serve the students and staff, as well as local professionals and residents.

The newest locations include an outpost that is part of new mixed-use housing development near the University of North Carolina. It is one of the main retailers in the neighborhood to offer groceries.

As to what new students shop for the most, food tops the list, especially grab-and-go lunch and snack items. Essentials such as toothpaste, toothbrushes and body wash are big too, along with dorm décor and apparel.

The new college sites come on top of the approximate 30 small-format stores Target opened in 2017. It plans to open about 30 annually over the next few years.
