Kohl’s honored for sustainability efforts

Kohl’s has received a high honor for its energy-saving accomplishments, which included new HVAC technologies and an LED upgrade in 2018.

The department store retailer has received the 2019 Energy Star Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence Award for continued leadership and superior contributions to the EPA’s Energy Star program. The highest honor among Energy Star awards, the Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence Award is given to partners that have already received Energy Star Partner of the Year recognition for a minimum of two consecutive years and have gone above and beyond the criteria needed to qualify for recognition.

“Kohl’s is proud to receive the 2019 Energy Star Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence Award,” said Steve Thomas, Kohl’s chief risk and compliance officer. “Our work with Energy Star is just one of the ways we are championing sustainability efforts that reinforce the healthy lifestyle we hope to inspire in our customers. In partnership with Energy Star, Kohl’s continues to evaluate our energy footprint across the country to increase operational efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint."

Kohl’s key accomplishments in 2018 include:

• Earning Energy Star certification for 26 additional stores, achieving a 90% certification rate across its portfolio;
• Improving its portfolio-wide Energy Star score by more than 2% over the previous year, from 80 to 82 and achieving a 5.4% reduction in energy intensity;
• Upgrading lighting fixtures with LEDs at 124 stores, estimated to save 36 million kWh per year, and installing new HVAC technologies at 58 stores;
• Holding an annual re-commissioning summit for employees to identify and discuss low-cost best practices for saving energy in existing equipment; and
• Promoting Energy Star to associates and customers through overhead announcements, customer receipts, banner ads on envelopes, screensavers, websites, and internal reports.
