How Target finally made it to all 50 states

Vermont is about to lose its distinction as being the only state in America not to have a Target store.

On Thursday, Target announced its will open its first ever Vermont outpost, a small-format location, in South Burlington in fall 2018. Target has been wanting to drop anchor in the Green Mountain State for some time.

In 2012, the chain tried to open a store in Williston, just outside of Burlington, but plans collapsed. With strict development regulations and residents who are often skeptical of big development projects, the state doesn't make it easy for retailers to build new stores, especially larger ones, the Star-Tribune reported.

But a couple of factors worked in Target's favor this time around.
