Walmart pumps sustainable fuel into e-commerce network

Walmart is deploying hydrogen and fuel cell technology in its electric vehicle fleet supporting e-commerce fulfillment.

The discount giant is utilizing GenKey hydrogen and fuel cell solutions from hydrogen engine provider Plug Power in a variety of e-commerce logistics vehicles. Walmart currently operates more than 9,500 GenKey fuel cell-powered electric vehicles at 37 distribution centers across North America, and has used Plug Power technology in its material handling fleet since 2010.

Walmart began expanding hydrogen and fuel cell solutions into its e-commerce network in August 2020, and plans additional rollout of the technology in 2021. GenKey provides the retailer benefits including flexibility, scalability, and fast fueling. According to Plug Power, its products consistently operate in Walmart’s material handling fleet at 99% uptime with constant power performance.

Walmart also intends to pilot the delivery of online orders to customers in Scottsdale, Ariz. via Cruise electric self-driving cars, beginning in early 2021. The company has pledged to reach zero emissions by 2040.

“The challenges this year have increased demand on leading brands providing necessary goods and services to customers,” said Jeff Smith, senior director, Walmart supply chain. “At our distribution facilities across the country, our decision to be an early adopter of Plug Power’s hydrogen fuel cells has helped us manage and meet the increased demand for food and basic supplies. This is why we’re excited to expand Plug Power’s proven solutions into our e-commerce network in 2021.”

“Walmart is one of our foundational customers, with our relationship rooted in trust and results as we work toward a more sustainable future together,” said Andy Marsh, Plug Power CEO. “This application expansion signifies the next step in our relationship as we support Walmart in their scaling e-commerce business while helping them meet the operational goals important to both Walmart and consumers.”
