Dining alfresco at the mall

7/11/2013

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Most malls have food courts. Westfield Valley Fair Mall in California’s Silicon Valley has begun construction of a multi-million dollar dining terrace that will feature indoor and alfresco seating.

Where in Silicon Valley is the mall? It straddles the border between two noted Silicon Valley cities: Santa Clara and San Jose.

Designed for fast casual dining and entertainment programming, the 23,000-sq.-ft. terrace will be cut from the mold of high-tech chic. It will feature contemporary indoor and outdoor spaces constructed of natural and raw materials including marble, basalt, wood, concrete and steel.

An alfresco patio complete with fire pits, a pizza and wine bar, sculptures and plush lounge seating will form an outdoor gathering spot for soaking up California sunshine.

Boudin Sourdough Bakery & Café, Ruby Thai, Chicken Wow and McDonald’s will all remain open inside the terrace footprint during construction.

Upon completion, the terrace will welcome 10 new upscale casual dining restaurants.

When the new Dining Terrace opens in November, it will cap off a year of major renovations throughout the mall. Since last year, 50 retail stores have been renovated and 11 shops relocated.

Part of the renovation fitted out a new luxury wing, which is now home to Burberry, Cartier, David Yurman, Mont Blanc, Tag Heuer, Wolford and others. Salvatore Ferragamo will make an appearance shortly.

Come November, Silicon Valley can toast its return to growth on the terrace at mall.
