Marimekko to open NYC flagship

10/5/2011

New York City -- Marimekk, the Finnish textile and clothing design company, will open a flagship in New York City, on Oct. 6. Located on Fifth Avenue in the Flatiron District, the store will act as a showcase for new products.

The NYC store is based on the same concept as the Marimekko flagship opened in Helsinki earlier this year. Both locations were designed by the Japanese architectural firm IMA in cooperation with Marimekko's own shop design team.

"The store is the spearhead of our strategy for the United States,” said president and CEO Mika Ihamuotila. Its mission is to showcase the world of Marimekko at its best, offering its full scope to American consumers.”

The flagship will also support the company’s online efforts and its U.S, partnership with Crate and Barrel.

“At the moment, there are already six Marimekko stores inside Crate and Barrel home furnishings stores, with the intention to open 17 more,” Ihamuotila said.

Marimekko is known for its original prints and colors. The company designs and manufactures interior decoration items ranging from furnishing fabrics to tableware as well as clothing, bags and other accessories.
