Road Runner Sports upgrades in-store fitting experience

Road Runner Sports is leveraging 3D scanning to help ensure the right fit.

A specialty fitness shoe retailer is integrating customer shoe fitting in stores with 3D scanning technology.

Road Runner Sports, which initially began offering proprietary 3D foot scanners in select stores in 2019, is now launching an all-new 3D foot scanner called Fit Finder. The scanner is the centerpiece of an upgraded, seamless in-store fitting experience Road Runner Sports calls Perfect Fit Zone.

Created by Road Runner Sports partner FootBalance specifically for the retailer’s customer needs and fully integrated into the Perfect Fit Zone, Fit Finder is available only in Road Runner Sports stores across the country.

How Perfect Fit Zone works – in six steps

  1. Store associates ask a series of introductory questions to better understand fitness activities and goals, shoe fit likes and dislikes, and any current aches and pains.
  2. Customers step on the Fit Finder 3D foot scanner to generate an accurate three-dimensional scan of their feet, which captures six foot measurements including foot size, length, width, arch height, instep and heel width, along with a map of balance and pressure points.
  3. Shoppers then walk or jog on a treadmill for a slow-motion video and biomechanical analysis, measuring foot flexibility, gait and stride.
  4. Associates will guide customers through their results and customize a plan designed to help them achieve a better, stronger, more comfortable run or walk.
  5. Customers are then molded for custom insoles to help create comfort and support for their feet.
  6. Finally, associates assist customers through the try-on experience, sharing shoe and sock recommendations to help find a fit in a process designed to take under 10 minutes.

“Our new Fit Finder 3D foot scanning technology offers a totally unique customer experience, available exclusively in Road Runner Sports retail locations here in the U.S.,” said Road Runner Sports president Mike Gotfredson, Jr. “In less than 10 minutes, our associates can provide customers with a comprehensive health-based foot analysis as well as personalized shoe and gear recommendations, including our own award-winning custom insoles. With the new Fit Finder scanner, each customer’s previous fit zone results, including purchase history, can now be accessed across all stores providing a more seamless experience.”

A family-owned and operated company for 40 years, Road Runner Sports is headquartered in San Diego, with more than 40 retail stores across California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and Ohio.
