A number of independent supermarket chains across the U.S. are streamlining prepared foods and catering operations.

The Instacart FoodStorm order management system (OMS), designed to help grocers manage deli, prepared foods and catering processes, is being deployed by seven local grocery retailers:

  • Dave’s Fresh Marketplace the largest local and independent retailer in Rhode Island.
  • Delucchi’s Market, a specialty market and delicatessen based in Redwood City, Calif.
  • FreshTake, a new grocery story concept by the operators of Little Giant Farmers Market in the Atlanta area.
  • The Foodtown and Green Way Market of Cross River chains in the Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
  • Il Mercato di Che Fico, a new specialty Italian market opening in Menlo Park.
  • Johnny Pomodoro’s Fresh Market, a family-owned grocer in Michigan.

The grocery technology company purchased FoodStorm in October 2021. The solution is designed to help store associates manage pickup orders, monitor payment statuses, and accurately handle items sold by weight.

In October 2023, Instacart updated FoodStorm to enable store associates to obtain access to customer order information by scanning a barcode, which instantly displays the corresponding order on a mobile device. In addition, customers have the option to settle their bills upon pickup.

“With FoodStorm deployed in over 700 stores across North America, we’ve evolved beyond just a catering OMS,” Rob Hill, GM, order ahead of Instacart, said in a corporate blog post. “Our technology is now a critical component in retailers’ stores, aligning with our goal of digitizing every store perimeter counter with FoodStorm. We take pride in partnering with grocers of all sizes, empowering them to serve their communities and accelerate digital growth.

“As the largest independent retailer in Rhode Island, we’re thrilled to embark on a new chapter of digital transformation in our prepared foods and catering business with FoodStorm,” said Dave’s Fresh Marketplace. “We’re excited about integrating its customer-friendly OMS into our processes, offering detailed reporting features that will elevate the quality of our meals services. We look forward to seeing how FoodStorm will help us continue to serve our community with even greater efficiency and creativity.”

San Francisco-based Instacart partners with more than 1,500 national, regional and local retail banners to facilitate online shopping, delivery and pickup services from more than 85,000 stores across North America on the Instacart Marketplace.
